Joseph Bartels is an associate in the Washington, D.C. office of Beveridge & Diamond, P.C., and focuses on environmental law and litigation.  Mr. Bartels recently assisted in the preparation of a post-trial motion contesting a punitive damage award in a gasoline spill case. He has also worked on litigation involving products liability claims related to alleged groundwater contamination involving a gasoline additive.

Mr. Bartels received his legal degree from the University of Chicago (J.D., 2005), where he was a member of the University of Chicago Law Review.  He received his undergraduate degree from Washington University in St. Louis (B.A., 2001).  He also completed coursework at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University, England; and at Davidson College.

Prior to joining Beveridge & Diamond, Mr. Bartels served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Curtis V. Gomez of the United States District for the District of the Virgin Islands.  During law school, Mr. Bartels worked for the U.S. Department of Justice, Environment and Natural Resources Division, and for the Special Litigation Section of the Oregon Department of Justice as well as the Oregon Office of the Attorney General.  He also participated in the Irwin Askow Affordable Housing Initiative in the University of Chicago's Mandel Legal Aid Clinic.

Mr. Bartels is a member of the Illinois State Bar, practicing pursuant to D.C. App. Rule 49(c)(8), and is supervised by Principals of the Firm.
